Unbraked cable drum rack with cable drums on axles

Drums up to Ø 1,000 mm · up to 1,000 kg per drum · bay widths 860, 1,160 and 1,360 mm · Advice and quotes from Darmstadt

A cable drum rack stores cable drums on axles, one above the other – clearly arranged, space-saving and set up so you can pay out cable straight from the rack. There are two versions: the unbraked rack with a 10° tilt for unwinding by hand, and the braked rack for heavy drums and use with unwinding machines. Starter bays and add-on bays combine into rack runs of whatever length you need.

Braked cable drum rack – for heavy drums and unwinding machines

The braked cable drum rack holds cable drums up to 1,000 kg and bay loads up to 6,000 kg. Braked axle supports stop the drum from overrunning, making this version suitable for powered unwinding or winding machines. Depth 1,100 mm, heights from 2,500 to 6,000 mm with two to six axles one above the other. Frames and beams are blue, the axle rests dust grey (RAL 7037), the axle cradles traffic red (RAL 3020) and the bracing galvanised. The brake shoes are wear parts and must be inspected regularly.

Cable drums are not included. The tables show example configurations; other dimensions and versions on request. Technical data based on manufacturer documentation, as of October 2026 – you will receive the complete data and conditions of use with your quote.

Starter bay, add-on bay and installation dimensions

  • Starter bay: two frames with beams, axles and axle supports – the start of every rack run.
  • Add-on bay: one frame with beams, axles and axle supports – attaches to a starter or add-on bay and shares its frame.
  • Total length of the rack run: sum of all bay widths + number of frames × 110 mm.
  • Allow at least 100 mm clearance to walls and building elements for the base plates, and also take the drum overhang into account.

Installation and safe operation

  • For installation in halls and buildings only.
  • Anchored into a concrete floor (at least C20/25, slab thickness at least 200 mm). Unsuitable surfaces include asphalt, interlocking paving, gravel and floors with underfloor heating.
  • Fit impact protection to rack corners along traffic routes; traffic routes at least 1,250 mm wide, secondary aisles at least 750 mm.
  • Centre the axles, set the centring cones firmly in place and insert the locking pins before unwinding.
  • Never exceed the permissible shelf and bay load shown on the load sign; do not climb on the rack.
  • Carry out regular visual checks and have the rack inspected by a competent person at least every 12 months.

Frequently asked questions about cable drum racks

Braked or unbraked – which cable drum rack do I need?

For drums up to 500 kg that are unwound by hand, the unbraked rack is sufficient. For drums up to 1,000 kg, or if you use unwinding machines, choose the braked rack.

Can I pay out cable directly from the rack?

Yes, the drums turn on the axles. With the unbraked rack, unwind by hand only and at an even pace – the weight of the drum can cause the cable to overrun.

Which drum sizes fit the rack?

Depending on the version, drums up to Ø 600, 800 or 1,000 mm and up to the stated maximum drum width. Large wooden cable drums standing on the floor can be secured with the cable drum brake or with wedges and storage blocks.

Are cable drums included in the delivery?

No. We supply frames, beams, axles and axle supports; the frames arrive dismantled with assembly instructions. On-site assembly is available as an option.

Can the cable drum rack be installed outdoors?

No, the racks are designed for installation in halls and buildings.

Note: The planning, installation and inspection of racking are governed by the regulations applicable at the place of use and by the manufacturer’s specifications; the operator is responsible for assessing the hazards. This page does not constitute legal advice.
